It was founded by the Umbri , called Ikuvium and later was dominated by the Romans and received the name of Iguvium.

After the Roman emperor Gubbio was conquered and then destroyed by various northern peoples.

In XIth century begun its final revival with an important political, social, cultural and artistic period.
